series to finish 2019

I’m a lover of series, because if I get attached to characters, series mean that I can continue to love the characters for however long the series is being published. However, with reading series comes some difficulties that usually end up with me never finishing them. Knowing that, I decided that I wanted to take some time in 2019 to finish some series that I started and loved, but never finished. Thanks to Anna @ Reader and Proud for hosting!

My biggest problem when I come to series is that I’m afraid of them ending. I tend to read the entire series up until the last one, and then never continue because I didn’t want to lose the characters and never experience their fun antics ever again. Below, you’ll find that a few of the series that I list have only 1 book left for me to read, and that’s why.

Another problem I have is loving the series and catching up to the author as they’re writing them. That leads to me stopping the series until the next book is published, and I tell myself “I’ll reread the series and then read this next one” and then I never do. And then more books come out, and I just never continue the series because I don’t remember the details.

So, since I have quite a few series that I have to read just the last book of, I’m just going to feature a few of the series I want to work on, and then have a short paragraph at the very bottom with the other series that I want to get through. If you don’t see a series on here that you know I’ve started but aren’t talking about, it’s probably because I decided to drop it: frequently, I start series and then decide that I don’t want to bother continuing them. This post is for series that I love and want to finish, but just haven’t because I’ve been too afraid or busy to finish.

Shades of Magic by V.E. Schwab [2/3]

I’ve read and loved the first two books of this series, A Darker Shade of Magic and A Gathering of Shadows. And even though I own A Conjuring of Light, I’ve heard a lot of iffy things about this last book, as well as the fact that this is the end of the series. I love the world building and the characters in this book, but knowing this is the end and that it might not end how I want it to is painful. I also don’t remember the events of A Gathering of Shadows that well, though I have reread A Darker Shade of Magic. I need to get past my fear though, and read this series to the end.

Realm of the Elderlings by Robin Hobb [3/16]

No, I didn’t mistype that number. This is a long series, broken up into four trilogies and one quartet. I’ve read the first trilogy and fell in love, but haven’t brought myself to read the next trilogy even though a friend of mine has read and loved the entire 16 book series. I guess my biggest worry with this one is that all of the books are 500-700 pages long, so they’ll take a long time to read. Despite this being a 16 book series, my goal for 2019 is to at least read the next trilogy, Liveship Traders.

The Expanse by James S.A. Corey [5/8]

Another long series, but I’m a bit further in this one than with the previous one. However, I can’t remember the majority of this series for the life of me. I’ve reread the first one a few times because that’s honestly my favorite one, but the rest of the series keeps getting better. I caught up with the publishing process though at around the 4th one, and now that the 8th and final one will be coming out soon … I need to get reading.

Lockwood & Co. by Jonathan Stroud [4/5]

I binged this series as audiobooks, and despite owning the audiobook of the last book, I just can’t bring myself to read it. I loved the idea behind this series, and while all of the books have been right on the edge of perfection, the 4th one finally hit the mark, and I don’t know how much I’ll like the last one. Either way, I’ve been avoiding this book like the plague, but I think I’m going to have to face it down eventually.

Timekeeper Trilogy by Tara Sim [1/3]

I read and loved the first book, Timekeeper, around the time the second was coming out. I was able to snag an ARC of the second … and then couldn’t bring myself to read it after hearing that the characters go through some intense shit in this one. Next thing I knew, the third and final book of this trilogy was released, and I also have an ARC of that one. Since I’m trying to read all the ARCs I have, I need to finish this series eventually, and I might as well get it done soon.

Other Series I Want to Finish:

Prisoners of Peace by Erin Bow [1/2], Dare Mighty Things by Heather Kaczynski [1/2], Djinn-Son Duology by Sami Shah [1/2], Themis Files by Sylvain Neuvel [2/3], The Seafarer’s Kiss by Julia Ember [1/2], Nemesis by April Daniels [1/2], Sidekick Squad by C.B. Lee [1/3], Monsters of Verity by Victoria Schwab [1/2], Xandri Corelel by Kaia Sønderby [1/3], Binti by Nnedi Okorafor [1/3], The Better to Kiss You With by Michelle Osgood [1/3], The Witchlands by Susan Dennard [3/4], and (maybe) The Illuminae Files by Amie Kaufman and Jay Kristoff [1/3].
