Down the TBR Hole is a meme started and hosted by Lost in a Story. It revolves around cleansing your TBR of all those books you’re never going to read and sort through it all to know what’s actually on there.
Which I could really use.
Here’s the rules spiel:
Most of you probably know this feeling, your Goodreads TBR pile keeps growing and growing and it seems like there is no light at the end of the tunnel. You keep adding, but you add more than you actually read. And then when you’re scrolling through your list, you realize that you have no idea what half the books are about and why you added them. Well that’s going to change!
It works like this:
- Go to your goodreads to-read shelf.
- Order on ascending date added.
- Take the first 5 (or 10 (or even more!) if you’re feeling adventurous) books. Of course, if you do this weekly, you start where you left off the last time.
- Read the synopses of the books
- Decide: keep it or should it go?
I’ll be doing 5 at a time. I probably won’t be doing this weekly, but I’ll try to do a post a month at least. I’ll also post the verdict at the bottom as a “Keep” or “Toss”. I hope y’all enjoy this one!!
The Book: The Darkest Minds by Alexandra Bracken
Why It Was Added: I believe I added this one around the time when I had just started looking into the book community. At that time, books like The Hunger Games, Divergent, and other well known dystopians were making their rounds.
My Current Feelings: While I’m still interested in reading it, I just feel like I know too much about the story to find it interesting anymore. I’m not all that interested in the story anymore, and, to be quite honest, I’m not the biggest fan of dystopians anymore. I also read a portion of this years ago, and never got further.
Verdict: I think I’m going to toss this one.
The Book: The Book Thief by Markus Zusak
Why It Was Added: Everyone and their grandmother had read this book by the time it came to my notice.
My Current Feelings: I was never really interested in this book. I’ve never been the biggest fan of historical fiction, so it has to be really eye-catching if I end up reading it. While the knowledge that Death is the narrartor in this book was definitely what made me buy the book, I have literally zero feelings on the rest of the story.
Verdict: Sorry, this is going to be tossed as well.
The Book: The False Prince by Jennifer A. Nielsen
Why It Was Added: I don’t know much about the book, but I knew it was fantasy at the time I added it. I think I had just been hearing good things.
My Current Feelings: Now that I’ve read the summary, I want to cozy down in my bed and read this book right away. I love high fantasy. I’m still a little iffy on competition books, but this one still sounds amazing!
Verdict: I’m keeping it!
The Book: Angelfall by Susan Ee
Why It Was Added: Similar to above, I’d heard good things. I think I knew it was a dystopian that dealt with angels though.
My Current Feelings: I’m….indifferent? While I’m still a little interested in reading it, mainly because a reviewer I trust highly recommended it, I really am unsure with the synopsis. It sounds interesting, and yet I still feel…meh?
Verdict: Keeping it for now. Maybe I’ll try it later?
The Book: The Book of Bad Things by Dan Poblocki
Why It Was Added: I was a huge fan of Dan Poblocki’s earlier books, such as The Nightmarys, The Stone Child, and The Haunting of Gabriel Ashe.
My Current Feelings: While I loved Poblocki’s earlier books, I haven’t been able to get into his newer books, such as his Shadow House books or The House on Stone Throws Island. Plus, I feel like there are better books I could be reading for this genre, rather than an author who I’ve seen taken a turn for the worse.
Verdict: Unfortunately, I’m going to toss it.
Well, that was fun!! It was definitely soothing, getting some books off of my ever-growing TBR list on Goodreads. It takes a lot to go through them one-by-one and deciding which to keep and which to throw, so having a mini post series really helps with that!
I’m going to be keeping a full tally of the results of this post series, so as of right now…
