I often struggle what to read next on my TBR, and I often think that I’m more of a mood reader than anything else. I read what I want to read, when I want to read it.

However, I always have a small list of books that I want to read ASAP scrolling through my head at all times. So, I decided to put together a small list of some of those books at the top of my mental list, ones that I want to read before the end of the year.

Let’s Talk About Love – Claire Kann
This book has been floating around Book Twitter since before the ARC copies were being sent out, mainly because it features a black, biromantic asexual character. I’ve heard wonderful things about this book, so I’ve been greatly looking forward to it.

The Thief – Megan Whalen Turner
I’m a big fan of fantasy. While I didn’t hear about this book right away, it eventually made it’s way to my ears around the time Thick As Thieves was coming out, and I was able to snag an ARC at a book signing. Unfortunately, I’ve just never been able to pick up the first, as it is a fairly long series.

Witchmark – C.L. Polk
I didn’t hear about this one until after it came out, but those I did hear about it from highly recommended it. The story just seems so unique and atmospheric, that I picked it up the moment I saw it sitting on a shelf.

Trail of Lightning – Rebecca Roanhorse
I’ve heard nothing but amazing things about this book, since it was announced, probably. I’ve been dying to read it, because of the story, and because of the rare, own voices, Native American representation.

No Man of Woman Born – Ana Mardoll
I’ll be brief with this one. Queer short stories, based in a fantasy world. How could I pass that up?

You Don’t Know Everything, Jilly P! – Alex Gino
After loving Alex Gino’s George, I knew I had to dive into this one. I was able to snag an ARC via Miss Print’s ARC adoption, and I’m hoping to dig into this one really soon!

Anger is a Gift – Mark Oshiro
This book is the same as the majority of the ones above it: I’ve heard amazing things about the story and the representation, and I’ve been dying to read it.

Beasts Made of Night – Tochi Onyebuchi
This one is purely coverporn, alright? I love that cover, how the shadows make a larger animal. I have no clue what this book is about, and I think the author is black. That’s literally all I know, but that cover is beautiful.

Amberlough – Lara Elena Donnelly
I’ve heard so many wild things about this book, I couldn’t not put this book on this list. I own a beautiful copy, but for some reason I’ve just never picked it up. I intend to change that very soon.

Plastic Wings – C.T. Callahan
I’ve had this book on my list for a good year or two. After having an author interview with Cit, I decided that I need to read this book ASAP. It sounds amazing, and Cit is an amazing person.

Runebinder – Alex R. Kahler
I honestly don’t know much about this book, but once upon a time, I read the summary, and needed this book like I need air. The cover is also stunning, and I can’t wait to see where this goes.

Darius the Great is Not Okay – Adib Khorram
Normally, I’m not the biggest contemporary fan. But I have to admit, this one caught my eye with the name, as well as that unique cover and a few twitter friends that have been gushing about it.

White Rabbit – Caleb Roehrig
I actually really want to read both of his books, but I’ve just been…iffy, I guess? I’ve kind of heard mixed reviews on both of Roehrig’s novels, but they both seem directly up my alley with the queer thrillers.

Devil in the White City – Erik Larson
I’ve become a true crime junkie recently, and this one is fairly popular. While I collect books for my true crime section on my bookshelf, I still need to read this one.

Temper – Nicky Drayden
I’ve heard wonderful things about Nicky’s The Prey of Gods. I was offered an ARC of Temper, and I really wanted to try Nicky’s writing, and since I didn’t have access to The Prey of Gods …

Mirage – Somaiya Daud
I know nothing about this book besides that it’s a Moroccan fantasy? I think the protagonist is forced to impersonate someone, but I may be completely wrong. Either way, I’ve only seen people gushing about this book.

Undead Girl Gang – Lily Anderson
The summary sounds amazing. I haven’t heard many reviews on this, but I always love me a good plot with witches, necromancy, and some queers.

Baker Thief – Claudie Arseneault
UH??? I don’t even know how to explain this book, but I’VE BEEN MEANING TO READ THIS FOR SO LONG AND I NEED TO READ IT N O W. I also need to read all of Claudie’s other books, such as City of Strife and City of Betrayal.
