Best Books of 2017

The Book Deviant's (1)According to Goodreads, I’ve officially read the most I have since signing up for the site: 90! I was really gunning for 100 last year, but there’s always this one! It might be harder, because I’m going to finish high school and enter college (wtf!) by the end of the year.

So, here are some of the best books that I’ve read over the course of 2017. That doesn’t mean that they’ve all been published this year, just ones that I’ve read!

Want (Want, #1)

The Tiger's Watch (Ashes of Gold #1)Want – Cindy Pon
At the time I read this, I was tired of dystopians, but I was curious about Cindy Pon. But this one put such a new spin on it, I fell in love.

The Tiger’s Watch – Julia Ember
I love genderfluid characters, and I love assassins! This book has both. So I guess that means you should read it?

Peter Darling

George

Peter Darling – Austin Chant
I had no idea who Austin Chant was before I heard about this book on twitter, but I soon found a new favorite! Age gap, trans Peter Pan retelling!!

George – Alex Gino
My AP Lit teacher made me read this one, and I’m sure glad she did. It hit closer to home than I expected.

Timekeeper (Timekeeper, #1)A Portrait of the Desert in Personages of Power – Rose Lemberg
My second Rose Lemberg story, but I loved it just as much as my first. My queer heart was joyous.

Timekeeper – Tara Sim
I cried about clocks.

The Seafarer's KissGena/FinnThe Seafarer’s Kiss – Julia Ember
I hadn’t known that I needed a Norse, sapphic retelling of the Little Mermaid from Ursula’s point of view until I read this book.

Gena/Finn – Hannah Moskowitz & Kat Helgeson
I picked this one up on a whim, and it literally rocked my world. It’s an intense book.

The Edge of the Abyss (The Abyss Surrounds Us, #2)

The Gauntlet

The Edge of the Abyss – Emily Skrutskie
I fell in love with The Abyss Surrounds Us in 2016, and this sequel was as heartpounding as the first one.

The Gauntlet – Karuna Riazi
I normally don’t read that much Middle Grade, but the Jumanji vibes as well as the Hijabi MC was just too much to pass up.

The Rules and Regulations for Mediating Myths & MagicMouseThe Rules and Regulations for Mediating Myths and Magic – FT Lukens
I only read this one on a chance offer, and I am seriously glad that I took it.

Mouse – Richard Ford Burley
Not only does this book have an Autistic (OV!) MC, but it’s also just plainly brilliant. More people need to read this one.

Reign of the FallenThe Gentleman's Guide to Vice and Virtue (Guide, #1)Reign of the Fallen – Sarah Glenn Marsh
The last book I finished before the new year was definitely something I wasn’t expecting. It makes me want to read more books with necromancy.

The Gentleman’s Guide to Vice and Virtue – Mackenzi Lee
I sorta knew how great this book would be. It was still amazing.

Long Macchiatos and MonstersFortitude Smashed (The Camellia Clock Cycle, #1)Long Macchiatos and Monsters – Alison Evans
You know how people have comfort reads that they just reread randomly to make them feel better? This one is mine. It gets my gender feels better than any other novel.

Fortitude Smashed – Taylor Brooke
With the book above targeting my gender perfectly, this book gets my mental health, perfectly.

Mask of Shadows (Mask of Shadows #1)

Mask of Shadows – Linsey Miller

You all didn’t think I’d forget this one, did you? Everything about this book is something that I can just fall back on, if not for spelling out my tragedies, but for giving me some fun to forget them. It’s one of those books that is just everything to me.

What were some of your best books of 2017?

  1. Omg I need to read “The Rules and Regulations for Mediating Myths and Magic” and “The Edge of the Abyss”!
My favourites of 2017 were Failure to Communicate and The Fifth Season! Among many others 😀

    • Rules&Regs and Edge are both AMAZING! I’ve been meaning to read Failure to Communicate for SO LONG, but I just haven’t gotten around to it 🙁 Also Fifth Season.. is that by NK Jemisin? I think I have a copy of The Inheritance Trilogy, but not The Fifth Season! I’ll have to look into it, thank you!!!!
